Orlando’s Pulse Advisory Committee unanimously voted Tuesday to advance the memorial’s final design on to the next phase in the effort to produce a permanent memorial.

The seven-month process that included design sessions and community feedback has culminated in a conceptual design for the future memorial, set to live on the site of the 2016 shooting that left 49 dead and a community forever impacted.

The City of Orlando says the final design is a reflection of suggestions made by the committee, community members, victims’ families and survivors.

The finalized conceptual design concept includes a number of design and structural details meant to help provide a space to honor those lost in the massacre, as follows.

Memorial and Reflection Space: Formed by the footprint of the original building.

Survivors Commons: Survivors’ tribute wall and seating area next to a designated survivors’ tree.

Private Gathering Space: A quiet space geared toward personal reflection, and an “Angel Personal Effects Capsule” for loved ones to leave flowers or personal mementos.

Angel Ellipse Site: Accessible elliptical walkway with 49 canopy columns to honor victims with rainbow-colored glass panels.

Healing and Prism Garden: Outdoor garden geared toward hope and healing.

Reflection Pool: Located where the original building’s dance floor was.

Visitor Pavilion: Space including public accommodations, exhibition space and an indoor gathering area.

The next step in the permanent memorial process will be a City Council workshop held Feb. 24. The city will then issue a request for proposal in March to choose a design and building firm, the city says.
