The shooter involved with Sunday morning's mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub has been identified as Omar S. Mateen of Fort Pierce, of St. Lucie County, Florida.

UPDATE: Authorities are now saying Mateen is from Port St. Lucie, Florida, just minutes south of Fort Pierce.

According to Fox News, Mateen was a 29-year-old, U.S.-born citizen with parents from Afghanistan. Officials say Mateen was "on the radar" for some time but not the target of any specific investigation. The shooter also held a Florida security officer license and a state firearms license, says TMZ

Mateen, who was carrying an assault weapon, a handgun and two "suspicious devices," was killed in a gun battle by police officers early Sunday.

At 2:02 a.m., a police officer working at Pulse responded to shots and then proceeded to exchange fire with Mateen, according to the Orlando Police Department. At approximately 5 a.m., the SWAT team made the decision to rescue the hostages.

Ron Hopper, an FBI assistant agent in Tampa, said at a press conference at 7 a.m. this morning that the shooter may have had leanings toward terror groups. "At this time we're looking at all angles right now," said Hopper.

"We do have suggestions that that individual may have leanings towards that, that particular ideology. But right now we can’t say definitively, so we’re still running everything around.”

The mass shooting, which authorities are now calling a "domestic terror incident," has resulted in 50 fatalities and 53 injured, according to ABC News
