When the brass hit midway through the John Henry deep(er) cut “No One Knows My Plan,” we scanned the audience for a quick observational inventory. We sighed in safety, knowing that the sold-out Beacham crowd has known the actual plan for decades. Not one frown on a face. They Might Be Giants’ show was a two-plus-hour social gathering of people from 10 years old to 70, people who all share a similar philosophy in life: You zag, I zig.
They Might Be Giants’ Big Show Tour couldn’t happen at a more appropriate time, when unconventional expression is increasingly monitored and condemned. Either you get them or you don’t. Since 1982, the plan hasn’t changed: Be yourself — don’t ask for permission to be bold — don’t take life “too” seriously — create! And if someone tries to steal that from you, kindly gift their soul a little birdhouse. Maybe they’ll lighten up. Gotta keep trying …
