The home, located at 6465 River Road in New Smyrna Beach, was at one time a retreat for the Joy of Painting host's students.
Ross died in 1995 at the age of 52, after years of late-blooming success from his instructional painting series that aired on PBS from 1983 to 1994. Ross perfected and taught a wet-on-wet oil painting technique allowing even the most inexperienced artists to complete a canvas in less than 30 minutes.
The Mediterranean-style residence was purchased by his company, Bob Ross Inc., in 1996 to act as a "classroom by the sea." Ross-certified instructors used the space to teach his technique and carry on his legacy.
The home isn't Ross' only tie to Central Florida. He was born in Daytona Beach, and opened the Bob Ross Art Workshop and Gallery in 1993 in New Smyrna Beach in 1992. He moved back and forth between New Smyrna Beach and Orlando, living in the Lake Bosse Oaks neighborhood of Orlando until his death, and is buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha.
