The average gallon of gas in Florida breached $4 as oil market trading increased due to escalating fighting between the U.S. and Iran.
The summer surge also hit the pump price in Florida for diesel, which leapt 32 cents in the past week.
“Geopolitical tensions can create volatility in energy markets, and that’s exactly what drivers saw last week,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said in a release. “While prices eased slightly by the weekend, motorists are still paying significantly more than they were just a month ago. Drivers should expect prices to remain sensitive to developments overseas and fluctuations in the oil market.”
With gas averages ranging from $3.68 north of Panama City in Jackson County to $4.21 across the Florida Keys in Monroe County, AAA placed the state average gallon at $3.92 on Monday.
The state average was up 12 cents from a week earlier and stood 7 cents lower than the national average.
The national average jumped to $3.96 on Thursday before easing over the weekend.
Diesel on Monday stood at $5.23 a gallon, the highest it’s been since May 23.
