Michael Hamill, who had been with the Gainesville Police Department since October 2016, officially resigned on Dec. 6, reports the Gainesville Sun Times.
Hamill resigned during an internal affairs investigation into a number of anti-Semitic Facebook jokes he posted, as well as allegations that he’d engaged in sexual relations while on duty.
In one post, Hamill wrote, "Here is one for everybody, 'What’s the difference between boy scouts and Jews?' anybody know? well it is because 'Boy Scouts come back from their camps.'"
In another he wrote, "Stupid people annoy me. Put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha."
According to the paper, Hamill resigned just before a scheduled interview with internal affairs. GPD spokesman Ben Tobias said in a statement that Hamill's resignation was an effort to preempt the investigation's findings, "Both allegations would have been sustained with a possible recommendation of up to termination," said Tobias.
Hamill was suspended with pay on Sept. 15.
