Every kung-fu saga eventually reaches its final battle, and the Wu-Tang Clan have duly entered the chamber for one last time. More than 30 years after turning Staten Island into their own “Land of Shaolin,” the Clan is taking one last swing with Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber.
RZA, the group’s founding member, once described their sound as a “home-cooked meal of hip-hop,” a recipe built from neighborhood rappers and the martial-arts films that helped shape the group’s mythology and sonics. Alongside RZA were GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Their 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), took their symphonic collision of kung-fu cinema and New York hip-hop out of Staten Island and all around the world.
Now, the final chamber opens at the Kia Center Tuesday. Make sure to “protect ya neck” — none of us are as flexible as we used to be.
