Claire Vandiver exists between spaces. Musically, the Orlando singer-songwriter has been working the liminal realm between indie, pop and rock. And now, she’s also going to be splitting her physical time between Orlando and her native Nashville to maximize prospects.
Over the past decade, Vandiver has steadily established herself as a promising young voice in the Orlando music scene through a steady stream of limited releases, mostly singles. But now, she’s — at last — just released her first full-length album, titled Evoke. On it, the balancing act that she’s been fine-tuning for years now has crystallized and bloomed.
Per her modus operandi, Vandiver’s sound unpacks in measured time. It’s layered pop with immediate appeal but a lingering finish of rich, subtle dimension. That long-brewing chemistry now kindles like never before, resulting in an album with bedroom eyes and cinematic depth.
With four advance singles, Vandiver’s been teasing the 11-song Evoke for nearly two years. Now, she finally uncorks the promise without delay on “I Don’t Recall Signing Up for This,” an opener heaving with slow-burn opulence and allure. Within are a couple upbeat glimpses like the sultry dance-pop of “Back by Popular Demand” and the sky-wide soul of “Biggest Bill,” which ably shows the height of her pop possibilities.
Mostly, though, Evoke keeps the mood patient and beckoning, where Vandiver casts her deepest spells. Songs like “Say You Will,” “Shy on Believing You” and “Where Were You” are slow dives into inner worlds of majestic seduction. With a Cigarettes After Sex-esque aura, an air that’s at once dreamy and massive, these pillow-pop smashes make Evoke a sleeper knockout of impressive atmosphere.
Vandiver took her sweet time to finally make her full-length debut, but it’s resulted in a watershed moment for her. This is the work of a confident and ready artist. Evoke now streams everywhere and is also available on both vinyl and CD. Furthermore, Vandiver will be performing at St. Augustine’s upcoming Sing Out Loud Festival.
