New Orlando outfit the Tom Haney Band makes their official debut at Stardust Video & Coffee this week, and they are not what you may expect. (Unless you, an oracle, are expecting stellar multi-generational power-pop.)
In this new band, frontman Haney is flanked by younger musicians, handpicked for their innovative playing and different musical backgrounds. While Haney was raised on the records of rock & roll outlaws like Ozzy and Robert Plant — no word on whether he played said records backward — his younger bandmates have proficiently studied jazz and classical music on an academic level.
And what do they play? We like to think of them as a tastefully twangy answer to 1990s power-pop, itself an answer to seminal 1970s tunesmiths like Cheap Trick and Big Star. A toe-tapping ouroboros, to be sure, but it brought us Jellyfish, Teenage Fanclub and now the Tom Haney Band … so all is forgiven.
Or as the Tom Haney Band collectively offers, they are definitely somewhere between Seattle and Nashville.
8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, Stardust Video & Coffee, $5.
