Hulaween, in an oversaturated festival market, stands out for many reasons. First, the location in the frankly awe-inspiring natural splendor of the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park makes it a unique experience, even without all the immersive installations and stagecraft that transform the area into an acid-fried wonderland over a long pre-Halloween weekend. It does, against the odds, seem like a fan-driven event still, avoiding the hype machine of a, say, Coachella, even while still drawing in massive throngs every year.
The lineup for this multi-day fete goes well beyond its jammy origins — though mainstays the String Cheese Incident are still playing marathon headlining sets several nights in a row — but there’s also My Morning Jacket, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Green Velvet and even ultra-buzzy young NYC rockers Geese. Festival organizers have made an attempt to simultaneously make general admission a tad more affordable, while simultaneously proffering VIP glamping and RV lodging options, a noble try in the face of voracious capitalism. (Will an enterprising attendee dress as “voracious capitalism”? The mind boggles.)
