Photos: Spike + the Gimme Gimmes and the Schizophonics left it all on the floor at Orlando’s House of Blues

Spike and the Gimme Gimmes brought their “Wet Hot American Summer Tour” to the House of Blues Saturday night and got an all-ages crowd singing and skanking to their brand of revved-up and punky versions of pop songs.

The group, packed with punk royalty from bands like Swinging Utters, Ramones, Rocket From the Crypt and The Damned, were all in top form. The Gimme Gimmes opened with a blazing take on Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and proceeded to work the crowd into a frothing frenzy with familiar hits from the songbooks of John Denver, ABBA, Willie Nelson, Madonna, Olivia Rodrigo and more chestnuts. The show came to a temporary halt during a reading of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” when a young crowd-surfing fan was injured badly enough to require medical attention. Crisis addressed, they roared on.

Opening the show in style was L.A. power-pop rocker Kate Clover, but the highlight for this old head was the whirlwind set by San Diego garage-rock trio The Schizophonics. The roomy HOB stage allowed frenzied frontman and acrobat Pat Beers plenty of space to dazzle the crowd with his nonstop energy and James Brown-esque dance moves. He got down (literally!), joining the crowd on the floor below not once but twice. An electrifying night of unhinged pop!
