Some time ago, Berlin birthed a production/DJ duo called Modeselektor, whose prime concern on Boogy Bytes Vol. 03 is to cram as many records as possible, at any cost, into a neat 65-minute package. The first official mix CD for these crazed electronic veterans is the third volume of the popular BPitch Control series, and the odds of a DJ mix with more vigor surfacing in 2007 look mighty slim. Modeselektor pulls riveting dubstep from Burial and Skream for Boogy Bytes Vol. 3, while surprises materialize with the spaced, Madlib-esque instrumental hip-hop of Flying Lotus, Radiohead’s ‘Idiothequeâ? and an exhibition of colorful, lesser-heralded electro grooves. Nothing here can be described as even remotely obvious, and if the tracks had the time to become tiresome (which they don’t), Modeselektor applies a toxic effects assault, bending and battering entries with glitchy unpredictability.
