Three CDs of David Crosby is a bit much when you consider there are only three Byrds cuts here (‘Eight Miles High,â? ‘Renaissance Fairâ? and the stellar ‘Everybody’s Been Burnedâ?). A demo recording of ‘Almost Cut My Hairâ? only makes the case weaker for the man’s musical legacy, which at this point has been eclipsed by his legendary chemical intake. That’s Crosby’s own fault. No one makes him write autobiographies with titles such as Since Then: How I Survived Everything and Lived to Tell About It. Such hideous self-aggrandizement filters its way into his music from time to time. (Naming an album Oh Yes I Can is near unforgivable.) Best to remember the man for his gifted way with harmonies and vocal arrangement, and that’s mostly what you’ll hear on disc one of this retrospective. Add a couple of demos from disc three for collectors’ purposes, and you’re well-served.
