After releasing several mix CDs and singles and running his record label Turbo Recordings, this is the first album from the Montreal DJ/techno pinup boy Tiga Sontag. With a seductive groove that’s also technically sound, Sexor is better than it needs to be ‘ after all, he’s practically a rock star in, um, Germany. But don’t hassle the Hoff, he’s actually a multitalented fellow who sings New Wave’style over beats he co-produces with electronic luminaries like Belgium’s Soulwax and Sweden’s Jesper Dahlback. Tiga is best known for his kitschy and crowd-pleasing electro versions of ‘Sunglasses at Nightâ? (the wonderful ’80s one-hit by Corey Hart) and ‘Hot in Herreâ? (Nelly’s inescapable anthem). This album’s covers don’t disappoint, especially the acidified take on Talking Heads’ ‘Burning Down the Houseâ? and the dispassionate tone he nails on Nine Inch Nails’ classic ‘Down in It,â? slowing the original’s frenzy to a barely conscious heartbeat.
