Bowing out with a brief ‘ but beautiful ‘ blast, the Band of the Name close out their ‘careerâ?� with this posthumous three-song EP. A BOTN recording is always substantially different from a BOTN performance; and the absence of costumes, concepts or other nonmusical distractions allows the full thrust and complexity of the group’s instrumental songs to come forward. Although this disc is nominally divided into three separate tracks, it could have been presented as one 24-minute song â?¦ or, more accurately, 24 one-minute songs. The detailed and intricately crafted ideas fly by, each fully formed and perfectly played, but ultimately rendered too quickly to leave strong individual impressions. Collectively, the arch elegance of the group’s sly, post’math rock compositional style is sublimely effective. It’s just too bad this is the last we’ll hear of them.
