As “psychedelic” music in the United States and Europe gets more and more nostalgic, leave it to a Japanese trio with grindcore roots, no less to poke a lysergic stick in the genre’s third eye and make it run around the room screaming. There are four songs on this 75-minute album, and each is quite different from the others. The most aggressive is the rocking eight-minute noise-rumble of “Demagog,” while the most expansive is “A Day in the Planet Orange,” a 40-minute (!) symphony of swelling feedback and dizzying semimelodic passages. But threaded throughout the album is a ruthless sense of adventure and unabashed musicianship. Unburdened by theoretical constraints, GMFTPO allows their visceral impulses to roam free, resulting in improvisational chaos that’s as intricate as it is exciting.
