Undertaking remix duties for the title track from Faking the Books, the well-regarded 2004 LP from electronic/organic hybrid enthusiasts Lali Puna, could be quite a gamble. However, Dntel’s winning multiple layers of acoustic manhandling on this sonically and politically rich track falls in the middle of I Thought, a smart collection of under-the-radar versions of Lali Puna songs and assorted Lali Puna-related goodies. Beatmaker Boom Bip takes on the German four-piece’s “Micronomic” by busying it up with expansive bubbling beats and guitar notes; in turn, the band’s fumbling and stoned version of his “Awaiting an Accident” occupies the comp’s fourth slot. As varied as I Thought is, with its inclusion of Sixtoo, Flowchart and Anticon’s Alias, the collection floats along with the condensed completeness of the breakfast-table photo on the Cheerios box: It’s a good start to the day.
