Streaming Wednesday, Sept. 23:

Brothers — This comedy series about lifelong pals who discover they may be siblings has Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing “fictionalized versions of themselves.” But seriously, what other kind of version of themselves is there at this point? (Apple TV)

Habeas Corpus — A Brazilian law professor and her students work to clear the name of a man they believe was wrongfully incarcerated. Based on the real-world initiative Innocence Project Brasil — or as it’s known in the profession, “Barry Scheck in a thong.” (Netflix)

Wonka’s The Golden Ticket — Somebody at Netflix had the brilliant idea of goosing interest in their upcoming Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory flick by slapping together a reality competition that puts actual contestants through the paces Willy Wonka once laid out for bratty kids. NGL, I’m kind of hoping the body count is roughly the same, because that place was the most dangerous fudge factory you’re going to find outside of CPAC. (Netflix)

Streaming Thursday, Sept. 24:

Balaraw: Blood Island — Filipino folklore fuels a shocker about a young woman searching for her missing mother on a mysterious island. (My own mother once went missing on Merritt Island, but we found her by sending up a smoke signal in the shape of a bran muffin.) (Netflix)

A Different World — The latest sequel series to a classic 1980s sitcom follows the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert as she navigates her freshman year at Hillman College. As is customary for Netflix, all 10 episodes are dropping at once, which means the show won’t feel irrelevant when HBCUs get outlawed a month from now. (Netflix)

My Sad Dead — Straight from the San Sebastián International Film Festival comes this four-episode adaptation of the works of Argentine author Mariana Enriquez, in which a suburban neighborhood that’s already rocked by violence has to deal with an influx of the resurgent deceased. I imagine this is what it would feel like were Pine Hills to be invaded by The Villages. (Netflix)

Streaming Friday, Sept. 25:

4 Blocks Zero — A prequel series to the German hit 4 Blocks takes us back to the 1990s to see how one family came to control Berlin. Listen, they had to do something when they got kicked out of Hillman College. (HBO Max)

Bloody Tennis — Hypercompetitive sports meet body horror, as a European tennis school proves to be a hotbed of shocking violence. And Martina Navratilova wants you to know that’s still better than letting Hunter Schafer play. (Shudder and AMC+)

The Final Problem — An English tourist is dead, and just about everyone else who’s stuck at the secluded Spanish hotel where it happened is a suspect. Can an actor who used to play Sherlock Holmes professionally crack the case? Hey, if Daniel Craig can do it, anyone can. (Get work as an actor, that is. Cracking the case is 50/50.) (Netflix)

Paolo — Civic engagement crosses the line into obsession when a French working stiff becomes unhealthily preoccupied with an old school friend who’s running for mayor of their town. Honestly, some people need to be reminded that politicians have boundaries too. I’m going to see if Anna Eskamani can do something about this the next time I text her at 3 a.m. (HBO Max)

Steel Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Second and Third Stage — Paraplegic former jockey Johnny Joestar and outlaw Gyro Zeppeli continue their horseback race across the United States of the 1800s in search of a $50 million payout. Damn, that was real money back then; now you’re lucky if it puts half a tank of unleaded in your Clydesdale. (Netflix)

Unabomber — Russell Crowe takes the title role in a sobering dramatization of the psychological torture that turned Ted Kaczynski into history’s most notorious hoodie-wearing terrorist. And if you think “torture” is an exaggeration, you try fishing the drawstring out of one of those things when it goes inside. (Netflix)

Streaming Monday, Sept. 28:

Outside — England’s The Sidemen send a bunch of their country’s “content creators” deep into the wilderness to tough it out for £1 million in this offshoot of their popular show Inside. Welcome back, Meghan! You’re just in time to learn to wipe with aster leaves like the commoners. (Netflix)

Streaming Tuesday, Sept. 29:

Lego One Piece — As if we needed further proof that the One Piece franchise is a cultural phenomenon, here’s a properly bricked-up (so to speak) version, in which a Lego variant of the notorious fabulist Osopp gives his own version of the Straw Hat Pirates’ quest to find the titular treasure. That’s pretty meta if you’ve ever attempted to finish a Lego build and found you were one piece short. (Netflix)

Mononoke the Movie Chapter Ⅲ: The Curse of the Serpent — The last installment in the anime trilogy focuses on the battle against a snake god that’s killing maids in the Tekugawa shogunate. Controversy has surrounded the casting of disgraced voice actor Takahiro Sakurai, who had a 10-year affair with one woman while secretly married to another he had been with for 20. To hell with the snake god, I want to see a show about that! (Netflix)

Sam Morril: Incorrect — In his latest stand-up special, the New York comic finds the humor in political assassinations and one-night stands. Makes sense: Those are two things that go a lot better if you don’t give your real name. (Netflix)
