Orlando filmmakers present cinematic visions to support Gaza aid org Healing Our Homeland this week at Stardust Video.
Organized by Jimmy Schaus (Malverde, Skeleton Warrior), the evening’s films were put together from an open call for Central Florida filmmakers to submit work based around “liberatory themes” along with proof of a donation to that Gaza Relief Fund.
“The aim was to keep things community-focused, in the hopes that selected filmmakers can attend the screening, invite friends and family, and meet other filmmakers in the community,” Schaus tells Orlando Weekly.
Citing Nouvelle Vague auteur Jean-Luc Godard as an inspiration, Schaus says that “it’s not so much about making political films, but making — and also distributing, exhibiting — films politically, which speaks to both the DIY ethos running through all the films and the fact that these filmmakers, by virtue of submitting to and exhibiting work in this showcase, are taking a stand against Zionism and genocide and for Palestinian liberation.”
While we sit with that last profound point, you should grab a seat at Stardust for this one.
