Zodiac is a 154-minute ode to directorial excess, a movie more interested in minutia than character development, a seemingly structureless descent into life-destroying obsession, and, oddly enough, one of the best ‘ or maybe just most originally voiced ‘ movies of 2007 so far. David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) ignores almost every rule in the book with this study of the men who tried to bring down the real-life Zodiac serial killer in 1970s San Francisco, and very little of it works as well as it should, but somehow the strength of his obsessive, single-minded direction makes you overlook all that.
