In writer/director Ol Parker’s Imagine Me & You, a just-married woman (Piper Perabo) finds love at first sight – and in the person of her wedding’s female flower coordinator, on the day she walks the aisle. But don’t expect the same kind of conservative backlash that has accompanied that other gay film currently in theaters: Imagine offers nothing that will shake up our social mores. The story settles for bad sitcom humor, a pedestrian romantic-comedy plot and a ridiculously sunny conclusion that belies the complexity of the situation and provides every party involved with an easy way out. You’ll recognize many archetypal supporting characters, including the husband’s wisecracking, hopelessly single best friend and the ironically wise child who may not know if penguins have knees but who’s always there for a comforting speech whenever a character needs one. For a lesbian movie that refuses to streamline its characters with commercial contrivances and also manages to have universal appeal, rent 1994’s low-budget indie Go Fish.
