Finally, a summer family film that can (and did) hold the attention of my 5-year-old nephew without getting me in trouble with his parents. Free of bloody violence, sex and inappropriate language/situations, Sky High is a cute if mild story about two proud, superheroic parents (Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston) whose pedigree makes their son, Will (Michael Angarano), eligible for attendance at a secret and otherworldly high school reserved for up-and-coming do-gooders. A basic good-versus-evil plot holds the film together until its somewhat surprising finale, but it’s the more typical interactions Will and his parents clash over obedience, and the in-school dynamic pits bullying crusaders-to-be against weenie-ish “sidekicks” that sweeten the show. The social situations will ring familiar to kids, even those of preschool age; adults get the added kicks of watching Lynda Carter (still tough and sexy) portray the school principal and a delightfully pigtailed Cloris Leachman step into the role of the school nurse.
