Walt Disney World is nearing the 50th anniversary of its opening. But before the “Most Magical Place On Earth” could open, reshaping Central Florida in its image, Walt himself had to tell the world his plans.

In 1965, Disney did just that. He shared the details of his “Florida project” and announced the park in a press conference with then-governor Haydon Burns. Disney noted that he chose the Orlando area for its convenience to nearly all parts of Florida.

Ten years ago, Disney released the archival footage to celebrate the parks 40th anniversary, but it’s just as interesting ahead of the big 5-0. Hearing Disney talk in hypothetical terms about Walt Disney World, still seeing the park as a risk that might not pan out, is incredible in the light of what Disney has become in 2021.

Take a look at a time before Disney was an all-consuming megacorp up above.
