Though it starts at the very non-rock & roll hour of 11 a.m. on a Saturday (is this even a real time of day?), the rewards are many with this 4K restoration of the cult 1984 classic. Filmmaker and provocateur Alex Cox’s sci-fi as punk capitalist critique still enthralls.
The movie follows two repo men (young punk and world-weary mentor) through the seedy underbelly of L.A. as they seek a Chevy Malibu that may or may not be a UFO. Whether it be the performances of Harry Dean Stanton and a very young Emilio Estevez; the volcanic soundtrack featuring prime Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Suicidal Tendencies; or the still-ahead-of-its time visual modernism that suffuses every frame, it’s worth skipping breakfast or brunch for.
