Opera Orlando goes big with their mainstage season opener this year: Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. The tragic classic is a mainstay of many a repertory company and even helped, over in the pop music sphere, launch a new generation of emo through Weezer’s mid-1990s Butterfly-indebted album Pinkerton.
For a long weekend at the Steinmetz, Opera Orlando’s singers and the Orlando Phil tell a tale of the tainted love between Madame Butterfly and Pinkerton. Aside from the stellar musicianship, OO has brought on a team of consultants to center Japan in the production beyond “just” a generic setting, and it will surely make the production stronger. Soprano Yeawon Jun makes her debut with the company in the title role. With some behind-the-scenes preview events already under their collective belts, this one is shaping up to be quite an event.
