Returning to its nouvelle vague marathon following two weeks off, the Southeast Museum of Photography comes correct with a special screening of this 1974 Jacques Rivette mindfuck. Why drive to Daytona for an old film, you might ask? Good question. (Thanks!) Not only is Celine and Julie the kind of carefully observed head trip that countless filmmakers from all around the world have attempted to often rapturous results (2010’s excellent Certified Copy from Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami; the entire oeuvre of Austrian master Michael Haneke), but it’s also one of only two of SMP’s chosen films that’s not available anywhere else. It’s not on Netflix or (U.S.) DVD or YouTube, unless you count a version in which someone holds a video camera to their own TV while it plays. In the age of everything on demand – especially with a genre as omnipresent and widely influential as the French New Wave – that’s quite a selling point. – Justin Strout
