It used to be that graffiti and street art were a thing of the underground. Something the kids did to damn the man and get their voices heard. The street-art movement has changed in the past decade, though, with Banksy becoming a household name and Shepard Fairey’s 2008 “Hope” posters of Barack Obama landing on the cover of Time Magazine. With street art becoming more commission-based and respected in the art community, artists in Orlando have gotten more recognition, most notably, Andrew Spear. While Spear works in traditional media as well, his street work and murals are what’s known around town. With murals previously and presently at Bold Hype, the Peacock Room and CityArts Factory, among others, Spear’s style has become iconic to Orlando. Catch him at Maitland Art & History Museums this Friday for a chance to view his work up close and personal, with gallery lighting and all. – Leanna Robinson
