This week is bookended by two very timely screenings at this Maitland arthouse. First up is a Thanksgiving eve outdoor screening of John Hughes’ 1987 road movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
The Steve Martin and John Candy holiday buddy-pic succeeds by sheer force of comedic will, over-the-top gags (“Those … aren’t … pillows!”) and a sweet-natured heart. Under the stars on the Enzian’s lawn is an appropriately warm (or brisk) and fuzzy setting.
Tuesday (Dec. 3), on the other hand, sees a very rare screening of 1979 Malcolm McDowell-led Caligula. Themes of a deluded and depraved leader leading a fading empire rife with corruption might just prep you for January. This “Ultimate Cut” isn’t for the faint of heart or prude-adjacent, but it is a compelling reminder that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, and 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3; Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, enzian.org, free.
