New York native singer-songwriter Ariana Di Lorenzo is performing in Orlando at her very first Fringe Festival, transforming the synth-pop disco album she recorded under the name “Ariana and the Rose” into a hourlong one-woman musical cabaret. During those 60 minutes, Breakup Variety Hour covers the six essential steps for getting over romantic devastation: Faking it ’til you make it, soaking in the sadness, embracing being the bad guy, getting back into the groove and so on. Each of DiLorenzo‘s life lessons are illuminated by a different track from her record, which she karaokes her way through while striking iconic music video poses in a slinky black dress.

Di Lorenzo is blessed with amazing vocal pipes, but at the press preview her lyrics were mostly mercilessly steamrolled beneath mountains of reverb effects and overcranked backing tracks. A powerhouse performer with an engaging personality, DiLorenzo’s production would probably be better served in a more intimate venue, rather than the Orange Venue’s relatively cavernous arena stage. But even if her marvelous voice gets buried in the mix, you won’t want to break up with Ariana by the end of her impassioned hour.
