That’s Why I’m Single, written by Dawson Tran and directed by Jacob Smith, presents a love-filled adventure of chaos and surprise that’s tailormade for the under-25 crowd.
Leo (Roma Zizza) and Austin (Jonathan Somerville) hatch a plan to get away with being the perfect matchmaker employees at their corporate speed-dating job. They are presented with five contestants — Willow (Emma Johnson), Megan (Sophia Valenciaga), Jenny (Kyra Martin), Tom (Sean Hawkins) and Marshall (Matthew Bracker) — who undergo a series of exercises hosted by Leo, while Austin goes undercover to make one of the contestants fall in love with him.
As the speed dating event continues, fiascos ensue. Through sexy catfights, undercover bosses and a grand scheme revealed, the audience follows how the plan spun by Leo and Austin unfortunately fails. However, the show ends on a romantic note, and the characters get their happy ending. The raunchy nature of this show stunned me at first, but the characters commit to their bits the whole way through, earning a good amount of laughs.
Despite the comedy, the show addresses relatable issues such as financial struggles and substance abuse. It’s meant for audiences that can handle adult themes; if you’re not looking for a ton of sex jokes, maybe sit this one out. It’s a little bit of everything: erotic, down to Earth, and all wrapped up with a resolution sure to satisfy its Gen-Z audience.
