Explore a wild menagerie handcrafted by writer-performer Roo Nafasat, who gathered all her wealth after the Indian Independence from the British and left for Florida. Creating a space for animals with hilariously different personalities, Roo’s Menagerie gives the audience a taste of how the creatures act and how she recruited them in the first place.
The beasts left behind (and embodied) by Nafasat include a tormented spider, a stoned lemur, a prissy show cat and a toxic bird of paradise. This strange array of creatures delivers monologues on their backstories, goals and pet peeves. (Nafasat transforms her look with different headbands, tails and makeup in between each animal solo act.)
The show is charmingly comedic without even really trying. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into initially, but by the end, I was thoroughly entertained. It felt inclusive to a wide range of audiences; you don’t have to have any specific interest or knowledge coming into this show to find it funny. A show worth seeing if you need a light-hearted laugh, with drinks being served right next door.
