Orange County pet owners have the opportunity to get their pets vaccinated and microchipped for free, thanks to two upcoming events hosted by Orange County Animal Services.
The shelter will hold two separate events, one for dogs and one for cats, at its location near the Mall at Millenia at 2769 Conroy Road.
The dog-centered event is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by the cat-focused event on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon. Both will offer drive-thru services held in the shelter’s carport area. Both days will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligible dogs will receive a rabies vaccine; a combination vaccine protecting against distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvovirus (DAPP); a bordetella vaccine; and a microchip with free registration. Cats will receive a rabies vaccine; a combination vaccine for feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (FVRCP); and a microchip.
The initiative comes in response to growing concerns about veterinary costs and an increase in cases of parvovirus among shelter dogs.
Diane Summers, manager for Orange County Animal Services, said the initiative is aimed at addressing concerns over veterinary costs while improving public health outcomes for pets.
“The diseases we see emerging here among our shelter pets is a snapshot of what is happening in our community, so we are offering these services, and encouraging every pet owner to take action, so we see healthier animals in Orange County and have healthier animals here at the shelter as well,” Summers said in a release.
