A quick definition of letterpress printing: Sharp metal letters are pressed with great force into thick paper, resulting in three-dimensional relief type with touchable, handmade charm. Our local fine-art print studio, Flying Horse Editions, does much more than letterpress, but they recognize its appeal to an Etsy-mad generation – and they have a big old Vandercook cylinder press, the gold standard for letterpress – so once in a while they let everyone in to tour the studio, have a drink and take a turn at the Vandy. One of these meet-the-press happy hours falls conveniently just before Valentine’s Day, and visitors are invited to press a personal lovey-dovey message into a heart-festooned card. Like Neil Young says, only love can break your heart, but just remember that a Vandercook can break your finger if you’re not careful. – Jessica Bryce Young
