That Santa Claus you know and love, Mr. Red Velvet Suit with his cheery twinkle-eyes and soft white beard? That’s not Santa. That’s “Coca-Cola Santa,” a marketing myth invented to keep kids in line and get their parents to buy a ton of crap every December. At least, that’s the conceit of Finnish director Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports, which is definitely not your average Christmas tale. It’s a dark, twisted collision between a surly reindeer hunter; his small, lonely son; a craven industrialist seeking to dig up the real, ancient Santa Claus; and an army of naked, pickax-wielding “elves” like none you’ve seen (or ever want to see outside of a nightmare). Enzian Theater screens this delightfully black Scandinavian horror-comedy at midnight Friday and Saturday, and we can’t think of a better kickoff to the holiday season. He knows if you’ve been bad or good
and if you’ve been bad, you should be very, very afraid. – Jessica Bryce Young
