Those floating pixels, better known as “flixels,” have now reared their head once again. This time, the flixels are part of an application Disney has filed with the FAA, who now requires all drones to be registered. The flixel drones would be part of a new nighttime show at Epcot. The application specifically shows them flying in a pre-arranged pattern over the Future World east pond (in front of the former Odyssey restaurant), but industry insider Jim Hill said earlier this week that the show may be moved to the Seven Seas Lagoon instead for safety concerns as they develop the technology.
There have been rumors over the past several years of a new nighttime show coming to Epcot soon and Disney has begun focusing on non-firework based nighttime entertainment in many of its parks including Disney California Adventure and an upcoming show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Those shows rely heavily on water based technology instead of traditional fireworks.
