Ahoy, mateys! Friday, Sept. 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and in order for ye to avoid walking the plank, we’ve plundered a booty of pirate slang words to help ye really sound like a buccaneer. All hands ahoy!

Bilge rat – An insulting name a pirate would call someone who they consider to be the lowliest creature on the ship.
Bucko – A jovial term meaning friend.
Scallywag – A term for a mischievous person.
Strumpet – A promiscuous woman or female prostitute.
Grog – An alcoholic liquor, typically rum diluted with water.
Arrr! – An exclamation that could mean anything from “yes” to “I agree” to “I’m happy.”
Booty – A term meaning treasure found on other ships.
Lubber – A person who is unfamiliar with the sea or seamanship
Squiffy – tipsy or slightly intoxicated
Blimey! – An exclamation of surprise
Hang the jib – to pout or frown
Plunder – to rob the booty of another ship. After all, that’s the main mission of all pirates!
