With a couple of mayoral races in Apopka and Winter Park on the schedule, who will voters choose in the four local elections happening throughout Central Florida later this week?

In what’s been deemed one of the more exciting elections for local politics nerds, Apopka incumbent Mayor Joe Kilsheimer is going head-to-head with Orange County commissioner and former state Rep. Bryan Nelson. This election may mean more than you think, too, since Apopka – the county’s second largest city – has what’s called a strong mayor form of government, meaning the post tends to all local general affairs.

Meanwhile, in Winter Park, voters will decide between incumbent Mayor Steve Leary, who owns a property management company, and U.S. Navy veteran and local newcomer Jim Fitch. Winter Park’s government is set up so that the mayor is one of five votes on the city commission, though other powers are apportioned to the mayor, such as appointing advisory board members.

Let’s not forget that voters in Ocoee and Belle Isle will also decide on open seats on their individual councils, as well as amendments to each charter.
