Democrat Eddy Dominguez replaces Paul Chandler in Central Florida House race

Orange County Democrats have elected Eduardo "Eddy" Dominguez as a replacement candidate in the special election for Florida House District 44.

Democrats chose Dominguez after Paul Chandler officially dropped out of the race earlier this month. Chandler resigned his bid for the district that runs through Winter Garden to Lake Buena Vista after his campaign was overshadowed by a lawsuit challenging his residency qualifications and a public fight between himself and Democratic leadership. Back in August, Chandler made an informal announcement claiming he withdrawing because party leaders threatened to sink his campaign, though party officials say it was in the best interest of the party for Chandler to let somebody replace him.

Although Orange County Democrats have picked Dominguez as their candidate for HD 44, Chandler's name will still appear on the ballot because Chandler did not withdraw from the race until after the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office printed absentee ballots.

Aside from Dominguez, the only other candidate in the race is Republican Robert "Bobby O" Olszewski, a former Winter Garden commissioner. Dominguez, 37, is the senior executive vice president at Resource Employment Solutions. Both candidates are running to fill the vacant seat left by former state Rep. Eric Eisnaugle, who was appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to be a judge on the Fifth District Court of Appeals.

The special election will be held Oct. 10.
