Mosonori and Sushi Saint will soon have a new contender for hand roll supremacy in this town.
Omakai Hand Roll Bar, the Miami-based temaki joint from the same folks behind Omakai Sushi, will roll into Mills 50 next year offering an intimate, counter-style dining experience centered around those cylinders of seaweed-wrapped seafood served directly from chef to guest.
Omakai will open at 845 N. Mills Ave. (map) in the building that previously housed Ultimate Carts. An opening timeline hasn’t been determined as yet, but given the building will need to be retrofitted to become restaurant-ready, it most certainly won’t be this year.

The key element to any good hand roll is, of course, the nori — Omakai will toast their seaweed sheets prior to wrapping and serving to ensure a crisp first bite. Fish and seafood fillings will be sourced from around the world, including Japan, the South Pacific, the Mediterranean and the Pacific Northwest.
“While Orlando has some great existing hand roll concepts, our focus is on delivering the Omakai experience through high-quality ingredients, approachable pricing and an engaging, chef-driven dining experience,” said a company spokesperson.
Menu prices at Omakai’s downtown Miami location run from $15 for three rolls to $34 for the “Omakai Experience.”
Beer, wine and sake will also be offered.
And while hand rolls are really meant to be enjoyed immediately, Omakai has drawn a good amount of fanfare for their to-go options, the “Homeakase Boxes” in particular.

Omakai Hand Roll Bar is looking to rapidly expand with locations in Brickell, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Coral Gables and Chicago being planned.
