Dreamroles is a high-energy cabaret-style show that turns wish-casting of infamous characters in musical theater history into a celebration of talent and pure nostalgia. Laurel Melina, Bryan Cantrell and Matt Cordon lean into roles they may not be cast in currently, but are amazing at playing. Together, the ensemble creates a personal and crowd-pleasing performance.

With a strong vocal blend among all three artists backed by live pianist Matt Cordon, the show works because the artists understand the joy of hearing familiar tunes in different iterations. Songs from Chicago, Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods, Wicked and more build a setlist hitting a broad and recognizable range of theater-kid obsessions. Despite not performing their own original content like some other Fringe productions, the cast’s talent speaks for itself. I got chills in the theater, and the venue was not cold. Not only can they all sing, the pianist can beatbox, so trust me that you will be blown away.

The show also includes nods to lesser produced materials, like off-Broadway works and pieces that haven’t been fully produced yet, which gives this cabaret show something special. The setlist feels curated rather than tossed together, and is overall well-balanced. Even the banter between songs flowed well. Dreamroles features lots of big choices, big voices and theatrical joy. Just remember, if there’s ever an audition for the roles mentioned in this performance, these performers will be there.
