Former Disney Channel stars Aly & AJ follow their own muse to the Beacham

Aly & AJ Michalka came of creative age deeply tied into the Mouse’s media empire both musically and in acting roles, but as with Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus, the sisters realized that following their own muse would be so much more satisfying (and lucrative) than continuing as cogs in the Disney Channel machine. So the duo went their own way, and re-emerged in 2017 with the Ten Years EP and hits “Take Me” and “I Know.” And now they’ve returned again in short order, with the upcoming Sanctuary mini-album and a tour of the same name that re-envisions the concert as safe haven and harbor for fans to be who they want/need to be. And on evidence of the recently released singles “Church” and “Don’t Go Changing,” the soundtrack that the siblings are bringing is sublime: razor-sharp but minimal pop anthems couched in sleek and chilly electronics that owe as much to Chvrches as to Bananarama and Eurythmics. And that cemetery press photo is just A+.
