Pennsylvania’s eternally tripping Black Moth Super Rainbow became a household name by playing in the shadowed edges of the Technicolor acid sun with their sticky-sweet yet vaguely creepy psych-pop. But for a while there, bandleader Tobacco’s more aggressive, punctuated and hip-hop-fueled solo work was outshining the mother ship. Now, he’s assumed the captain’s chair and has managed to inject the edge of his solo perspective to BMSR’s altered state. So they’re back with their most incisive, salient work yet with the hot-off-the-presses new LP Cobra Juicy. The result is psychedelic ‘70s cool with modern production and kick, one that merges their trademark menthol-vapor vocals with sleek Air-esque lines and moving rhythmic punch. This is Black Moth Super Rainbow reborn and evolved. But show up early for the David Liebe Hart Band. Anything from an outsider cult figure who does music, art, street performance and puppetry is sure to be fascinating. – Bao Le-Huu
