These days, the sight of a “DJ” who’s not really a DJ so much as a manipulator of electronic keypads is far more common than it was a decade ago. Now, although a good bit of the “not a real DJ” dilettantism hangs around, such critiques typically fail to faze the MPC-smashers as they’re on their way to the Bank of EDM Gold & Riches. What many folks forget, though, is that controllerism – the live manipulation of music via a digital control such as an MPC – is not only a drastically different art than turntablism, it also contains within it far more room for experimentation. Sure, Skrillex and his fellow Traktor-lovers are indulging in exactly the opposite of adventurous experimentation, but this show – featuring the always-invigorating wildness of DiViNCi, the funk of Beef Wellington, D003Y D3C1MAL’s glitch and other local DJs-who-aren’t-DJs-but-really-are – will feature some bold and fun button-pushing that will raise questions far more advanced than “WHERE’S THE SICK DROP, BRO???” – Jason Ferguson
