Monthly alt-drag showcase Communion is a uniquely Floridian phenomenon, rooted in the aftereffects of being raised in and around Southern Christianity, punk rebellion and the fatalistic sense of “us against the world” that can only come from living in a Republican-dominated state.

Co-helmed by DJ Pup Rocky and Anesthesia (who will perform a song by Diamanda Galas, and you know times are dark when Ms. Galas raises her vengeful head), the night is a freewheeling tour through subterranean glamour-as-performance art through lenses of horror, punk, metal, pure-pop and goth.

“We gather in Communion to reclaim community from the hateful, bigoted and blasphemous sects of religion that have tried to steal it from the LGBTQ+,” says Anesthesia.

Based on attending previous iterations, the bar is particularly high for Sunday. This one-year anniversary celebration features Gex, Davi Oddity, Glit3rrr and an appearance from visiting royalty, Opulence Black — which goes a long way toward establishing a cursed lineage.

“This show in particular is quite special because this cast is all people I would consider not only the most talented and engaging performers in Orlando, but some of my closest friends,” explains Rocky. “Opulence Black not only gave me my first real booking in Orlando, but has also been there for me as a guide and mentor throughout the years of being a show director.”

Blessed be, indeed.
