Corners box you in with thick synths and thumping rhythms

It’s impossible not to mention Joy Division when listening to Corners’ stuck-in-the-’70s post punk sound, and the L.A. band will instantly tire of the comparison (if they haven’t already), but with those thick synths and thumping rhythms, Ian Curtis fans are sure to lose control on first listen to Maxed Out on Distractions. Released last October, the record luxuriates in tasteful instincts, charging with a more somber but just as frantic Devo-esque freakout on songs like “Buoy” and settling into even more curious territory on the more spacious and almost surf-y songs like “Against It.” No two songs live in the exact same space, so your ears are perpetually perked. Add to this intrigue the fact that loaded locals like Golden Pelicans (garage punk drunks/demigods) and Me Chinese (catchy psych punks who dance better than you) round out the bill, and you’d have to have no pulse to not make it to this one.

CORNERS with Golden Pelicans, Me Chinese | 8 p.m. Sunday, March 8 | Will's Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave. | | $7-$10
