For all your pastry bag, balloon whip and candy thermometer needs, Whisk and Bowl is now open upstairs at East End Market. Owner Karen Manfredi is a graduate of pastry school, but it wasn't her professional experience that made her want to sell the tools of the trade, it was feeling the connection to family that cooking can create:
"I inherited a heavy, striped earthenware bowl and an old spring-coiled whisk from my 96-year-old grandmother, who I loved dearly. I have made bread in the bowl and used her whisk every week, and still feel close to her and memories of her home. I appreciate the quality of these items, as they were made to last for a long time."Whisk and Bowl isn't the place to dash into for a cheap spatula when you accidentally melt yours; it's more of an heirloom, tools-to-last-forever kind of place. Which makes it fit in at EEM, really – they don't sell too many last-minute cheapo ingredients there, either. Manfredi's blog is a great source for hyper-detailed, step-by-step baking projects and recipes. Also opening soon upstairs at East End Market: a new indie bookstore called Bookmark It. Owner Kim Britt hopes to open sometime in March, but hasn't set a firm date — we'll keep you posted.
