Supergroups are almost never quite the sum of their star parts. Once in a long lucky while, however, along comes a true gestalt, a nuclear fusion that yields something truly great on its own. In the 21st century, few are better instances than multimedia phenoms Gorillaz, the once-in-a-generation alchemy of Blur’s Damon Albarn, celebrity illustrator Jamie Hewlett and a star cast of collaborators.
