State Sen. Darren Soto, D-Orlando, filed a bill this week that would set a statewide minimum salary for teachers of $50,000, News Service of Florida reports.
Called the “Florida Teacher Fair Pay Act,” the bill would “require lawmakers to set aside enough money in the state’s main education-funding formula to pay for the salaries and other education needs,” the report says. If passed, the bill would go into effect the next school year and require cost-of-living increases.
Data from the National Center for Education Statistics show that in 2013, Florida’s estimated average annual salary for teachers in public elementary and secondary schools was $46,944, below the U.S. average annual salary for teachers of $56,383.
