Ready for your next bookish fix that also supports your local library system?
The Friends of the Library bookstore, located on the third floor of the Orlando Public Library downtown, is hosting a 50 percent off spring sale this weekend, featuring reduced prices for gently used books, CDs, DVDs, board games and other physical media.
Friends of the Orange County Library System is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dating back to 1939 that raises funds through its library bookstore to support the Orange County Public Library system.
The Orange County Library System serves more than 1 million county residents and is largely funded through local property taxes — remember this the next time Florida Republicans pitch abolishing property taxes — in addition to grants and donations.
“Friends of the Library make it possible for the Orange County Library System to improve the quality and scope of its services,” the charity states on its website. “Everyone should be able to enjoy the privileges of information access, entertaining events and education found in a great library system.”
This weekend’s Friends of the Library Bookstore sale runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, April 10-12, at the Orlando Public Library. (Members of Friends of the Library can access this sale a day early, on Thursday.) The sale applies to a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction titles — including young adult fiction — in addition to CDs, vinyl records, DVDs and other bookish collectibles. The Orlando Public Library is located at 101 E. Central Blvd.
Although the Orlando Public Library doesn’t have free parking, you can access two hours of free parking at any metered or non-metered parking space downtown by using the ParkMobile phone app and entering the code “ParkDTO” upon reserving a space. This is part of the city’s recently extended free parking program, intended to help spur more foot traffic downtown.
There is also a paid parking garage located across the street from the library that charges $2 an hour.
