Mother Jones says Rubio hired convicted felon from Orlando to help Florida campaign

Today, Mother Jones published a story about how the Rubio campaign hired the West Orange Tea Party’s Clyde Fabretti as one of its Orange County leaders. According to the story, in 1997 Fabretti was convicted of a felony charge of “conspiracy to commit income tax evasion, bank fraud, mail fraud, and failing to file tax returns. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison and three years of probation. He was also ordered to pay more than $200,000 in restitution.”

Fabretti resonded to Mother Jones with an email saying, “I have accomplished much, done my share of good deeds, made my share of mistakes, for which I accept accountability.” The publication says he didn’t respond to all of its questions about his past or about the fact that he’s continued to vote in elections, despite his felony conviction. Mother Jones says it asked about that because it was unable to find any evidence that Fabretti’s voting rights were ever restored.

Fabretti is also a member of the “team” for the Back2God evangelical consulting movement, which aims to overcome the “holy injustices” that the world has brought upon itself (“homosexuality is considered acceptable” is the first thing the church lists among those injustices, alongside drug addiction and murder, just so you know what kind of organization we’re talking about here). Back2God wants to bring church and state under one roof again, presumably by helping to elect people like Rubio, who may not show up for work all the time, but certainly loves God and doesn’t really love gays. So much so that he recently confused everybody with a loud pronouncement that, even though he thinks civil servants must obey the law of the land (i.e., gay marriage is legal), he also thinks “God’s rules always win” because Christians shouldn’t abide by a government that is “compelling us to sin.”
